Turn Letters and Positions into Possible Words

A word guessing puzzle is really a collection of clues. A confirmed letter tells you where a character belongs, a misplaced letter tells you that it belongs somewhere else, and an excluded letter tells you what can be ruled out. Box Logic brings those clues together in one place, allowing you to reconstruct the information from your guesses and narrow the word list with each new constraint.

The solver supports words from 3 to 8 letters and is built for more than one fixed answer length. Use the Locked Letters row for confirmed positions, the Shifting Rows for misplaced letters, and the Excluded Letters field for characters you know cannot be used. When one round of misplaced-letter information is not enough, click '+ Add Extra Shifting Row' to record another set of positional restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I use Box Logic for a five-letter word puzzle?

A: Place confirmed letters in their exact positions in the Locked Letters row, enter misplaced letters in the Shifting Rows, and put excluded letters in the Excluded Letters field. Then select Find Matches to see words that satisfy the information you have entered.

Q: How do I add another shifting row for misplaced letters?

A: Click the '+ Add Extra Shifting Row' button. Each additional row lets you record information from another guess, including positions where a known letter has already been shown not to belong.

Q: What is the difference between locked and shifting letters?

A: A locked letter is one you know occupies a particular position. A shifting letter is known to be in the word but cannot occupy the position where it was previously entered.

Q: Does Box Logic support five-letter words only?

A: No. You can choose word lengths from 3 through 8 letters. This makes Box Logic useful for standard five-letter puzzles as well as variations with different answer lengths.

Q: Can Box Logic find words from a pattern?

A: Yes. The solver combines known positions, misplaced letters, excluded letters, and word length to produce candidates that satisfy the supplied constraints.

Q: What should I do if there are no matching words?

A: Check the letter positions, excluded letters, and shifting-letter information for an accidental contradiction. If all of the clues are correct, the answer may not be present in the solver's word list.
